The negligee is a form of nightgown that is often transparent and used as lingerie. Appearing in 1700's France, it was shaped as a sleep version of the long dresses worn during the day. In the Roaring 20's era, the form changed to match the more sultry evening dresses that were in style, with a shorter length, lacy trim, and a transparent look with materials like silk and rayon. Additional accentuation like bows, ribbons and bodices became more popular in the post war era as the negligee shifted from sleepwear to the more sexual forms of lingerie.
