Giganta, a recurring supervillain in DC Comics and one of Wonder Woman's most formidable adversaries, first appeared in Wonder Woman #9 (Summer 1944), created by William Moulton Marston and artist Harry G. Peter. In her Golden Age origin, she was a gorilla artificially evolved into a powerful, red-haired human woman by the scientist Professor Zool, who used an experimental process to accelerate evolution. This version of Giganta embodied primitive strength and savagery, leading a rebellion of cavemen against modern society before being defeated and eventually rehabilitated on Themyscira, where she joined the original Villainy Inc. alongside other foes like Cheetah and Doctor Poison.
In the Post-Crisis continuity, introduced in the late 1990s and solidified in works such as Wonder Woman (vol. 2) #127, Giganta's identity shifted to Dr. Doris Zeul, a brilliant scientist afflicted with a fatal blood disease. Seeking immortality, Zeul attempted to transfer her consciousness into Wonder Woman's body, but interference led to her mind inhabiting a gorilla before settling into the body of a metahuman circus performer named Olga, who possessed innate size-altering abilities. This granted Giganta her defining power: the capacity to increase her size dramatically, up to hundreds of feet, with corresponding enhancements in strength and durability, while retaining her genius-level intellect and scientific expertise.
Giganta's character has evolved through various eras, including memberships in groups like the Secret Society of Super Villains and the Injustice League, as well as occasional alliances with Gorilla Grodd, with whom she shares a romantic connection in some stories. Significant developments include attempts at reform, such as a brief romance with the Atom (Ryan Choi) and periods of heroism, contrasted by relapses into villainy. In the New 52 and subsequent reboots, her origin was adjusted to involve powers gained from experimental radiation treatment, sometimes at the cost of diminished intelligence, reinforcing her role as a complex antagonist driven by ambition, illness, and raw power.
