Madelyne Pryor first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #168 (April 1983), created by Chris Claremont and Paul Smith, as a pilot bearing an uncanny resemblance to the deceased Jean Grey. Introduced during Cyclops' (Scott Summers) period of retirement from the X-Men, she quickly formed a romantic relationship with him, leading to their marriage and the birth of their son, Nathan Summers, who would later become the time-traveling mutant known as Cable. Initially portrayed as an ordinary human with a fabricated backstory, Madelyne represented a chance for domestic stability for Scott following Jean's apparent death in the Dark Phoenix Saga.
Subsequent revelations established Madelyne as a clone of Jean Grey, engineered by the geneticist Mister Sinister to produce a powerful offspring from the union of her and Cyclops' genetic material. When Jean Grey was resurrected and Scott abandoned Madelyne to rejoin his former love, she spiraled into despair. This betrayal, compounded by demonic influences from Limbo, awakened her latent telepathic and telekinetic abilities and transformed her into the villainous Goblin Queen during the 1989 "Inferno" crossover event. As the Goblin Queen, she allied with demons to invade Earth, seeking revenge, but was ultimately defeated and seemingly killed in a psychic confrontation with Jean.
Madelyne has been resurrected multiple times in subsequent stories, often manifesting as a psionic entity or through various means, allowing her to return as an antagonist or complex anti-hero. In more recent developments during the Krakoa era, she was brought back via mutant resurrection protocols, initially facing rejection but later inheriting rulership of Limbo from Magik. This elevated status led to her involvement in events such as "Dark Web" (2022-2023), where she asserted greater independence, and she has since led teams like the Dark X-Men, embodying a blend of tragic victimhood, demonic power, and resilient autonomy.
