La Lunatica, a mutant from the Marvel 2099 universe (Earth-928), first appeared in X-Men 2099 #3 (December 1993). Characterized by her striking appearance—bone-white skin and hair, piercing red eyes, and fang-like teeth—she possesses superhuman strength, agility, reflexes, and durability, augmented by her primary ability: psychic vampirism. Through skin-to-skin contact, she triggers a victim's most traumatic memories, inducing intense emotional and physical pain while absorbing the released energy to further enhance her physical attributes. Her origins remain partially shrouded, though she is believed to have manifested her powers as a teenager in a Mexican border town before being captured and enslaved by the Theatre of Pain, a sadistic organization that exploited suffering for entertainment.

Initially serving as an enforcer for the Theatre of Pain under the control of a shock collar operated by her handler, Controller-13, La Lunatica was dispatched to capture rogue mutants, including members of the emerging X-Men 2099 team such as Bloodhawk, Meanstreak, Krystalin, and Timothy Fitzgerald (later known as Skullfire). During this confrontation, her attempt to feed on Skullfire's pain unexpectedly overloaded his powers, short-circuiting her collar and granting her freedom. In retaliation, she destroyed Controller-13's mind and escaped, marking a pivotal shift from antagonist to potential ally.

Following her liberation, La Lunatica developed a complex romantic connection with Skullfire, which influenced her decision to join the X-Men 2099. She contributed significantly to the team's efforts, including assaults on the Theatre of Pain's facilities, the rescue of leader Xi'an Cho from corruption, and defenses against threats like the Graverobber and the Phalanx. Relocating with the team to Halo City as official protectors, she embraced a more heroic role while retaining her fierce, predatory demeanor, and hints of a biological tie to the Theatre's leader, Brimstone Love, added depth to her ongoing struggles.
