The M551 Sheridan was an airborne, amphibious light tank developed and operated by the U.S. military during the Cold War. It was designed to be airdropped from transport aircraft, and it could also travel across water, thanks to internal flotation elements and a deployable screen. After seeing service in the Vietnam War (starting in 1969), the invasion of Panama, and the Gulf War, the M551 was officially retired from U.S. military service in 1996.
