    --

Renee Hopkins is 25, lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and is a superhero.

This is not a metaphor, a hobby, or an elaborate cosplay arrangement. Renee is a superhero. She has a custom-made uniform, a utility belt, a pair of rather expensive red goggles, and a raspberry-pink maple leaf on her chest. She does not have superpowers, a secret identity, or any particular authorization to fight crime, but considers these relatively minor administrative details.

Renee has been fascinated by superheroes since childhood, although unlike most people, she never quite grew out of the idea that being one was a perfectly reasonable career aspiration. At twenty-two, after several years of recreational gymnastics, weight training, and an increasingly ambitious interest in sewing, she designed and constructed her first proper uniform. The current version is considerably more sophisticated, incorporating reinforced panels, weather-resistant materials, custom-fitted accessories, and approximately six hundred dollars' worth of things she ordered online because they looked tactical.

She wears it everywhere. Grocery shopping, dentist appointments, family dinners, trips to the bank. Renee is always on the job, and superheroes don't wear civilian clothes while they're on the job. She finds the suggestion that she should somewhat baffling. Nobody asks a firefighter why they’re dressed like a firefighter. Her parents, having exhausted all reasonable arguments by her twenty-third birthday, have largely given up the fight, though her mother still holds out hope she'll at least take the goggles off for Christmas dinner.

Despite her extraordinary appearance, Renee is a remarkably ordinary and well-adjusted young woman. She works remotely in statistical analysis and data reconfiguration, pays her bills, maintains a tidy apartment, and has a perfectly healthy social life, although first dates tend to involve a few more questions than usual. She's cheerful, outgoing, occasionally stubborn, and possessed of a nearly indestructible optimism. She understands perfectly well that she cannot fly, stop bullets, or throw cars. She simply believes that helping people, standing up to bullies, and occasionally rescuing an animal from somewhere inconvenient ought to qualify as superhero work.

Her actual heroic accomplishments include administering first aid to a cyclist, finding three missing pets, helping an elderly neighbour carry groceries, and once successfully preventing a shopping cart from rolling into a parked Subaru. She maintains a detailed log of these activities. The shopping cart incident has its own entry.

Renee is also, somewhat inconveniently, tall, athletic, and built to proportions that seem more appropriate to comic-book illustration than everyday life. She attracts considerable attention wherever she goes. Her social media following is substantial, although a surprising percentage of it appears more interested in her figure-hugging uniform than her advice about pedestrian safety. Renee is aware of this, and occasionally exploits it to get more people watching her public-service announcements.

She does not consider herself a cosplayer. Cosplayers dress as fictional characters. Renee dresses as Renee. She has never adopted a civilian alter ego, never been photographed without her uniform, and has no intention of changing either policy.

The local police regard her as harmless, occasionally helpful, and best discouraged from investigating anything genuinely dangerous. A few neighbourhood children think she's the greatest person alive. Most adults assume she's either promoting something or off her meds.

Renee doesn't particularly mind what people think.

Halifax has a superhero now, whether it asked for one or not.
