Frances Wilson is a library technician in Truro, Nova Scotia, where she helps college students find everything from obscure references to the printer they're standing beside.
Raised in Pictou County alongside her younger sister Kim, Frances grew up in a household that encouraged creativity and curiosity. Their mother taught both daughters to sew, although Frances was the one who actually developed the patience to finish things. Their father shared his enthusiasm for local history through museum visits, historic sites, and family drives that inevitably included an educational detour. Frances loved every minute of it. Kim generally wanted to know when they were getting ice cream.
The sisters were close growing up, although their personalities couldn't have been more different. Frances was thoughtful, organized, and content to spend an afternoon reading or making something. Kim was energetic, outgoing, and forever proposing adventures that were only loosely thought through. Frances frequently found herself helping her younger sister execute some ambitious plan, a dynamic that has continued well into adulthood. She likes to pretend Kim exhausts her, but rarely turns down an invitation.
Community theatre led Frances to costume-making, which led to renaissance faires, which led to owning considerably more bodices than any reasonable person needs. She makes most of her own outfits and will happily spend a weekend playing a tavern keeper with suspiciously modern opinions about workers' rights. Kim occasionally joins her, usually in a costume Frances helped make, and has a tendency to become far too invested in whatever character she's playing.
Frances is friendly and patient, with a dry sense of humour that emerges once she knows you. She's usually the first to notice someone feeling left out and find an excuse to bring them into the conversation. She's also stubborn about doing things herself: offer to help before she asks, and you may get a polite refusal followed twenty minutes later by a sheepish request. Her competitive streak comes out over board games, despite her insistence that she's "just here for the company." Kim has never believed this for a second.
Off duty, she enjoys tabletop games, thrift-store projects, woodland walks, and baking enough for everyone, even when "everyone" is four people. An amicable breakup a few years ago encouraged her to stop saving her favourite things for special occasions. These days, she's quicker to say yes to a road trip, wear the dress, or join the dance. Kim considers herself partially responsible for this development and is not shy about mentioning it.
The sisters remain close, visiting regularly and sharing an ongoing collection of family jokes that nobody else entirely understands. Frances admires Kim's fearlessness and ability to make friends anywhere, while Kim appreciates having someone who will tell her when an idea is terrible without necessarily refusing to participate.
Frances can fix your torn sleeve, find your missing citation, and explain why the sword you bought is going to be a problem in the car. She'll still help you fit it in.
