About the Artist
Boris Mikhailovich Kustodiev (Борис Михайлович Кустодиев, 7 March 1878, Astrakhan – 28 May 1927, Leningrad) was a Russian painter, graphic artist, theater designer, illustrator and sculptor — one of the most beloved and most reproduced Russian artists of the 20th century.
Training: Imperial Academy of Arts (1896–1903), studied under Ilya Repin; graduated with a gold medal; spent a year in Paris at the studio of Fernand Cormon
1900s–1910s — the "Silver Age" years: member of Mir Iskusstva (World of Art), worked alongside Benois, Somov, Bilibin; painted portraits of Shalyapin, Blok, Bilibin, Akhmatova's circle
1911 onward — the birth of the "Kustodiev Russia": The Merchant's Wife at Tea, The Fair, Maslenitsa, The Balcony, The Beauty — his own mythology of merchant Russia, painted from memories of his childhood in Astrakhan and provincial Kostroma
1916 — diagnosed with spinal tuberculosis; spent the rest of his life increasingly paralyzed, eventually working from a wheelchair
1917–27 — the tragic paradox: the most life-affirming, abundant paintings in Russian art were created by a man confined to a bed in a small room in Petrograd during war, revolution and famine; his "fairground Russia" was a remembered Russia, a dream of a world he could no longer walk through
