About the Artist

Gil Elvgren (June 15, 1914, Saint Paul, Minnesota – February 29, 1980, Siesta Key, Florida) was an American pin-up and advertising artist, one of the most important and beloved pin-up painters of the 20th century.

• 1937 onward: joined the Stevens-Gross advertising agency in Chicago; produced ads for Coca-Cola, General Electric and others

• Mid-1940s – 1970s: began his legendary association with Brown & Bigelow, the calendar company — producing the pin-up calendar paintings that made him a household name in garages, barracks and barbershops across America

• Method: Elvgren photographed his own models in his studio (carefully staged "accidents"), then idealized them in oil — longer legs, smaller waist, brighter eyes: "the girl next door, but an inch taller and a few pounds lighter"
