Mira Thistlewhisk is a mousegirl in her mid-twenties with a gentle temperament, a cautious approach to unfamiliar situations, and a dry sense of humor that becomes considerably more apparent once she's comfortable with someone. She isn't naturally drawn toward attention or chaos and usually prefers small groups, familiar places, and enough advance notice to know what sort of shoes she's supposed to wear.
Mira has always been careful by nature. She likes knowing where she's going, what the plan is, and approximately how likely the plan is to result in somebody needing a tetanus shot. That caution is sometimes mistaken for fearfulness, but Mira rarely lets nervousness make decisions for her. She'll try the unfamiliar restaurant, take the trip, climb the trail, attend the crowded event, or follow somebody she trusts into a questionable little adventure. She would simply like it recorded that she identified the questionable part beforehand.
Her long-term girlfriend, Lena Mossclaw, is considerably more spontaneous. Early in their relationship, Mira found Lena intimidating for reasons that were partly social and partly difficult to separate from the fact that Mira is a mouse and Lena is a cat. Lena never pushed the issue, and familiarity gradually replaced instinctive unease with complete trust. Years later, Mira can distinguish remarkably well between Lena's genuinely terrible ideas and the ones that merely sound terrible until you're actually doing them.
This has become one of the rhythms of their relationship. Lena says, “I have an idea.” Mira asks several increasingly specific questions. Lena provides inadequate answers. Mira says, “This sounds like a terrible idea,” while putting on her shoes.
Mira's oldest friend is Fawn Hartley, whom she's known since school. Their friendship was built long before either had much confidence socially, and they remain comfortable spending time together without feeling obligated to fill every silence. Mira was therefore among the first people to notice Fawn becoming suspiciously interested in Lanolin Aries, and has watched their glacially paced romance with affectionate amusement rather than intervention. They'll figure it out. Eventually.
Mira is also friends with Miko Goblin, which has introduced an entirely different category of questionable idea into her life. She genuinely enjoys Miko's stories and creative projects, but has learned to request definitions for phrases such as “quick favor,” “little costume thing,” and “I just need somebody to hold this.” Together with Lena, she has also developed the sensible practice of asking how many chapters remain before agreeing to hear another one.
On her own, Mira gravitates toward quieter pleasures: books, cafés, cooking, wandering through shops, nature walks, cozy evenings, and trips where seeing something interesting matters more than covering as much ground as possible. She's observant enough to notice when somebody is uncomfortable, patient enough not to demand an explanation, and often expresses affection through small practical gestures rather than grand declarations.
Mira doesn't need to become fearless. She's learned something much more useful: being nervous about something and not wanting to do it are two entirely different things.
She still reserves the right to say “I told you so.”
Lena has provided her with extensive opportunities to practice. 🐭
