Mara Jade, a Force-sensitive human female, first appeared in the 1991 novel Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn, as part of the Star Wars Legends continuity. Born around 17 BBY, she was taken from her family at a young age and trained by Emperor Palpatine as one of his elite Emperor's Hands—secret agents and assassins who operated in the shadows, carrying out his personal directives through a combination of stealth, combat prowess, and limited Force abilities. Following Palpatine's death at the Battle of Endor, she received his final telepathic command to kill Luke Skywalker, whom she blamed for the loss of her purpose and status, leading her to adopt the cover of a smuggler working for the criminal leader Talon Karrde.
In the Thrawn Trilogy, Mara initially serves as an antagonist aligned with Grand Admiral Thrawn, capturing Luke Skywalker but gradually forming an uneasy alliance with him and the New Republic forces against greater threats, including the insane Jedi clone Joruus C'baoth. Through these events, she confronts and overcomes the Emperor's lingering influence, fulfilling his command in a symbolic manner by destroying C'baoth's clone of Luke. This marks the beginning of her redemption arc, during which she develops her Force sensitivity independently, constructs her own lightsaber, and begins training under Luke Skywalker, evolving from a bitter operative into a capable Jedi with a pragmatic, combat-oriented approach.
Mara's development culminates in her marriage to Luke Skywalker in 19 ABY, as depicted in later novels such as Vision of the Future, after which she takes the name Mara Jade Skywalker and gives birth to their son, Ben Skywalker. She rises to the rank of Jedi Master, serving on the New Jedi Order's High Council while balancing her roles as a trader and diplomat. Her story concludes tragically in the Legacy of the Force series, where she is killed by her nephew Jacen Solo, who has fallen to the dark side as Darth Caedus, solidifying her legacy as a complex figure who transitioned from imperial loyalty to selfless devotion to the Jedi cause.
