Maxwell Dillon, known as Electro, is a prominent supervillain in Marvel Comics and one of Spider-Man's most recurring adversaries. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko, the character made his debut in The Amazing Spider-Man #9 (February 1964). In his origin, Dillon, an ambitious electrical lineman, is struck by lightning while repairing a power line during a storm, an accident that imbues him with the ability to generate and manipulate electricity. Embittered by a lifetime of being overlooked and exploited, he adopts the Electro identity, turning to crime to exploit his newfound powers for personal gain, beginning with high-profile robberies that draw Spider-Man's attention.
Electro possesses extensive electrokinetic abilities, allowing him to produce massive electrical discharges, absorb ambient electricity to enhance his strength and durability, project bolts capable of overwhelming superhuman opponents, and achieve flight through electromagnetic propulsion. His signature costume, initially featuring a green-and-yellow design with a star-shaped mask adorned with lightning motifs, has undergone several revisions over the years. As a classic foe of Spider-Man, Electro frequently operates as a solo criminal or hired enforcer, but he is perhaps best recognized as a founding member of the Sinister Six, a villainous alliance orchestrated by Doctor Octopus to collectively challenge Spider-Man.
Throughout his publication history, Electro has experienced notable developments, including power amplifications that temporarily elevated him to near-godlike status, such as during "The Gauntlet" storyline where he became a being of pure energy before apparent death and subsequent resurrection. He has participated in major events like the Ryker's Island supervillain breakout and alliances with groups such as the Frightful Four and Emissaries of Evil. In contemporary narratives, including resurrections facilitated by figures like Doctor Octopus, Electro continues to evolve as a volatile threat, embodying themes of unchecked power and resentment within Spider-Man's rogues gallery.
