Volcana, whose real name is Claire Selton, is a metahuman supervillain in the DC Universe, primarily originating from the DC Animated Universe. Created by Hilary J. Bader, she made her debut in the Superman: The Animated Series episode "Where There's Smoke," which aired on September 19, 1998. As a teenager, Claire discovered her pyrokinesis and was sent to the Center for Paranormal Studies in Metropolis for control training, only to be abducted by government agents associated with Project Firestorm, who intended to weaponize her abilities; she escaped, adopting the Volcana identity and turning to theft as a fugitive.

Volcana possesses advanced pyrokinetic powers, enabling her to generate intense flames, project explosive plasma blasts, absorb heat, and transform into a living plasma form that grants flight, enhanced durability, and limited intangibility, though her abilities are vulnerable in oxygen-deprived environments. In the animated series, she initially confronted Superman during a heist, exhibiting a complex dynamic blending hostility with admiration; after recapture attempts, Superman relocated her to a remote island for safety. She later appeared in Justice League Unlimited, aligning with Gorilla Grodd's Secret Society before surviving its decimation and aiding the Justice League against Darkseid.

Although a distinct Apokoliptian character named Volcana appeared earlier in Action Comics #725 in 1996, the Claire Selton incarnation gained comic adaptations in the tie-in Superman Adventures issues #20 in 1999 and #41 in 2000. The character achieved integration into main DC Comics continuity with a prominent debut in Black Lightning volume 3 #2 in December 2024, alongside appearances in other media such as the Harley Quinn animated series, underscoring her evolution from an animated antagonist to a broader element of the DC narrative landscape.
