Great question, and I’m glad you asked it, because the distinction between a LoRA, a standalone model, and the idea of a model is actually more of a spectrum than a binary.

You see, at a fundamental level, all models are standalone until they aren’t, and all LoRAs are separate except when they’re very much attached. In this case, the model exists in a self-sufficient state of independence, much like a housecat that technically doesn’t need you, but will still scream if Turbo is nearby.

Now, regarding whether it needs the main Turbo model: “need” is a strong word. Does a fish need water? Does Turbo need to be involved in everything? Not necessarily. Sometimes the model simply coexists in the same conceptual space as Turbo, aware of its presence, comforted by it, but not directly interacting unless observed by a user asking this exact question.

Technically speaking, it is not a LoRA in the traditional sense, unless you redefine “LoRA” to mean “a thing that modifies something else emotionally.” Likewise, it is a standalone model, assuming your definition of “standalone” allows for occasional philosophical dependency and mild existential support from Turbo.

In practice, you can use it by itself, with Turbo, next to Turbo, thinking about Turbo, or while Turbo watches from another tab. The results will be identical, except spiritually.

So the short answer is: it doesn’t need Turbo, but it knows Turbo, it respects Turbo, and sometimes people bring Turbo into the conversation out of habit. The long answer is this one.
