Kurama was following a ritual in which she placed herself in suspended animation until a potential mate awakened her with a kiss. When a drunk underling arranged for Ataru Moroboshi to give her the wake-up kiss, Kurama was originally reluctant to mate with him. After failing to change Ataru into an acceptable mate, she attempted to give herself a redo. Despite Ataru awakening her again, she initially thought Mendō had woken her. When she found that Mendo was identical to Ataru, she tried Ryunosuke, a female, and finally Rei, who turned out to be a transforming space cow that loved Ran instead.
