The hobgoblins of the Mox Confederation’s rock quarries carry drills taller than most miners, and the only music they care for is the whine of metal on stone. They don’t talk much either, and when they do, it’s about things like rock composition. “Mostly shale with a granite base, innit?” Or drill bit wear rates. “Tungsten tips last longer in limestone. Dolomite eats ’em up.” Or torque speed ratios. “Quarter turn per second. Any faster, you’ll tear up the housing.”

But the Conclave Arcana didn’t hire them for their personalities. They hired them to do what they do best: dig. Long hours. Deep holes. No complaints.

They trudge behind Portia Nyr, hauling shaft-drills up the ridges and peaks of the Agniavas. They bore into the rock, chipping at the mountains in search of Praetoria’s secret.

They don’t ask questions. They don’t share opinions. They’re no good at small talk.

But they can drill like nobody's business.
