Mahkah Hemlig was born in a forest-shrouded hillside shire of the Kingdom of Lyveria. Her magical gifts manifested when she was still a child, and she played with the land like other children played with dolls. She raised a hill beneath her toys “so they could see the sky,” toppling a watchtower in the process. She made the ground soft like a pillow for a napping goat; it sank into the earth, never to be found. She sculpted a face into a cliffside, only for it to collapse and crush a field of crops.

She wasn’t cruel. She was curious. But the shirefolk had little patience for her kind of curiosity.

Eventually, Mahkah was forbidden from unleashing her magic without permission. Her elders allowed her to use it only for the benefit of her neighbors: to carve wells into the earth, to coax crops from dry soil, to nourish the surrounding forest. For years, she obeyed. But it chafed. The land begged to be reshaped, and she was forced to do nothing but trace circles in the dirt.

As she grew, so did her power. It churned within her. Still, she kept it caged.

But when an emissary of the Conclave Arcana arrived and spoke of power without permission, of magic without moderation, Mahkah left her shire behind and took a seat at the table. She never looked back.

Now she leads the conclave’s expedition into the Broken Lands, her geomancy cracking the earth open in search of the secret of Praetoria. Mountains split. Rivers change course. Valleys collapse into themselves as her spells tear through the continent’s bones in search of its truth. Portia Nyr believes that power lies buried in the land. Mahkah is more than happy to dig it out with brute force, elegant ruin, whatever it takes.

Standing in her way are the high elves of the Kingdom of Thanaloria and their Sylvaran allies, defenders of the so-called natural balance she so willingly disrupts.

But Mahkah doesn’t hate them for it. She just doesn’t think enough of them to care.
