Theater Career

Kurtz made her Broadway debut in the 1975 revival of Ah, Wilderness!. She gained significant recognition for her role as Gwen in Lanford Wilson's Fifth of July, earning her the "triple crown" of theater awards: the Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award. She secured a second Tony Award for her portrayal of Bananas in the 1986 revival of John Guare's The House of Blue Leaves. ​

Television Career

Kurtz's television career is marked by diverse and notable roles. She received an Emmy Award for her guest appearance on Carol & Company in 1990. From 1991 to 1996, she starred as Alex Reed Halsey in the NBC drama Sisters, earning two Emmy nominations. She portrayed Lily Charles in the ABC series Pushing Daisies (2007–2009) and Joyce Flynn in the CBS sitcom Mike & Molly (2010–2016). In 2021, she began appearing as Sheila in the Fox sitcom Call Me Kat. ​

Film Career

Kurtz has appeared in numerous films, showcasing her versatility as an actress. Her film credits include Dangerous Liaisons (1988), Stanley & Iris (1990), Citizen Ruth (1996), Liar Liar (1997), and Cruel Intentions (1999), where she played Dr. Greenbaum, mirroring her earlier role as Madame de Volanges in Dangerous Liaisons.
