In [my environment] it is not unusable if you don't apply the HIRE fix. As to whether I would continue to use it, NO.
First, it does some kind of (whitish) filtering just before the final step of normal generation, and it ruins what is not a bad generation.
If you try to apply a hirefix, even the author's sample, which I read, cannot be published because it is grotesque, meaning that it is a warning to view it. Or, a pattern is added all over the screen as if it is for the purpose of preventing reproduction.
I think this is probably unintended behavior, but there is no reason to bother using a model where such things can happen.
I'm not sure if the usual comparison chart people are able to generate it properly? I'll wait for others to post theirs.
Just use SDXL VAE.
