    Trigger Words:komusou-priest

They were actually full-fledged Buddhist monks of the Fuke sect, whose founder was the Chinese Zen master Fuke of the Tang dynasty, and are also called Fuke monks.

They wore a kesa over their kimono, a verse box or a burlap sack with the word "gebako" written on it hung around their necks, and a basket-like straw hat called a "tengai" (canopy),

and although they were monks, they did not shave their heads, and were even allowed to carry swords by Tokugawa Ieyasu, making it relatively easy for them to return to secular life, making them a rather unusual type of monk.
