Disappointed?

Well quite disappointing, isn't it? Many people tried to quess why 42? Well simple answer: Addam Douglas want a number that sounds funny.
However, you have not clicked this quide for that, didn't you? I woundn't have, anyway.

Purpose

I've seen quite a few images and prompts over the few month and thought things like:

Whoa what a nice style!
How did they to THAT!
Why does it look so different from my generations?

Well I then check the prompt for detail. A thing I've found in many prompts were stuff like:

octane render
volumetric lighting
subsurface scattering
unreal engine etc.

What I want to summerize with this guide is a list of prompt modifiers (not sure it's the correct term, but it feel understandable). I did some "research" with my new friendly helper chatGPT, what kind of engines, rendering technics and art styles there are.

How does SD understand prompts and learns new stuff?

I'll try to summerize in easy words how I imagine SD understands prompts. For my student I explain it like this:

Imagine a child born, knowing nothing. However, from the first moment on it perceives it's surroundings. During the bounding it learns how its mother smells and the process continues. At some point it knows what a table is. Some thing with a plate and 4 legs. Let's call this state the base model of SD or SDXL. During finetuning this basemodel learns, that table can be a round coffee table, too. So it extends its knowledge of the table concept.

The neural network now associates with table not only 1 rectangular plate and 4 legs, but round shapes with 3 or even just 1 leg. It's "networked". During an example with a random prompt with my students (like each of them gives 1 word to the prompt) we had situation where we had cat and big in the prompt. As result we got 3 of 8 images with a tiger. How did that happen? Well my guess is cat is a feline, tiger is a feline and tiger is associated with big feline in the neural network. (At least thats my guess)

Comparing a neural network with an actual brain might real helps in analysing results of prompts. In a brain information is connected. Another example, look at the next person you see. What shape has the persons face? Your will use the concept of a 2 shape to describe the shape of the persons face. In one of my other guides I tried training style LoRAs only with shapes. It works! However, it works to well, because every image contains shapes, it can even be a perspective that looks triangular! So the concept is transported in different ways into the image. (check this guide of AIGARLIC, they made some basic training testings for LoRA) That made it really hard to get good results for persons sometimes. Fire was really challenging to train and in the end, face are still "made of fire" and get blurry or "flamed".

Next small example more related to training. Finetuning models give us creators endless possibilities. However, images used to train, push the model into the direction of input images subjects. So models trained on females are more likely to produce females, when the prompt is unspecfic, like "human" or "person".

Short example, my institution wants a project, where the students use generative AI, my fellow is teacher for history and would want Martin Luther as the main actor in the project. So I checked Dreamshaper 7 for Martin Luther, created image look mostly like the 2-3 images we have of him. No surpise, he's a celebritiy and "all" of his images are most likely part of SD1.5 base model. Putting him in a setting like a church portal in full body, well didn't work. It was just some monk with no resemblance of ML. So I tried prompting a monk looking like ML. With just monk and DS7 I got a female monk, beautiful!, but not ML. I tried to be more specific like, hair, eyes, double chin and MALE! Got a male monk, male, thin, beautiful, real handsome guy. Changed model to RPG5, got an buddhistic monk, well there might be more images of buddhistic monks than european monks. So models might prefer buddhistic monks over european monks.

I hope that these examples can help understanding better how our prompts work, without diving to deep into the technical layers.

With this "knowledge" you can assume that it depend on the models you use, if and how the following prompt modifiers work. I found that most of the words had the expected result in DS7 or SDXL Faetastic.

Some like Charmd or Super Natural were a bit primed by the TV-Series and a few other in a different meaning. ;)

Finally 42, the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything! Well seed 42. ❤️ As a fan of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, there's only one option.

I use seed 42, with the x/y/z plot script, to make the images more comparable. Tried it with Dynamic Prompt wildcards, but it changes the seed.

Setup:

Why this .? I wanted an image uninfluence by anything.

In the following chapters I'll only list the items tested.
