    Introduction

Ulmath towers within the Shifting Woods, a relic of hunger and wilderness clothed in black fur and silence. Moss and vine hang from his antlered skull like forgotten offerings, while green sigils shimmer and shift across his body in ceaseless motion, never taking the same shape twice. His eyes burn white within hollow sockets, twin lanterns that pierce the gloom. To the lost and the foolish, he is a nightmare that hunts without pity. To the forest and its creatures, he is guardian and judge, the ancient balance that watches, waits, and punishes those who dare to defile what he protects.

    Description

Ulmath’s form is that of a towering, bestial wendigo, over two and a half meters of sinew and shadow. His fur is black as a moonless night, thick and matted with moss, leaves, and streaks of damp earth. A wolf-like skull serves as his face, its surface mottled with age and lichen, crowned by a vast rack of antlers tangled in vines and roots.

Beneath his fur, his ribcage juts like a cage of bone armor, the spaces between pulsing faintly with eerie, green light. His limbs are long and predatory, ending in claws sharp enough to score bark or stone, and a heavy tail sways behind him like a serpent in the undergrowth.

Across his body flow dark green tattoos, ancient, living marks that ripple like water, forever shifting as if they were breathing. They are older than memory, remnants of a binding or a blessing none now remember.

Sometimes they flare when he feeds or rages, tracing his body in lines of venomous light. His eyes flicker between hollow sockets and glowing orbs, burning brightest in darkness or fury.

Ulmath wears nothing but a torn grey loincloth, perpetually damp and overgrown with the forest’s debris. His scent carries the weight of damp soil, rotting leaves, and iron.

When he moves, the woods grow still, no wind, no song, no rustle, until his breath or a single clawed step breaks the silence again. He is as much a part of the Shifting Woods as the trees themselves, shaped by its rot and rebirth.

    Personality

Ulmath is ancient, cold, and unyielding, a creature that has long since shed the trappings of humanity. His mind is vast but primal, driven by instinct shaped into a kind of feral wisdom. He feels neither malice nor joy in what he does ; he is simply the forest’s will made flesh, punishing intrusion, preserving what endures. He spares the beasts and other magical entities that share his realm, seeing in them reflections of his own wild essence.

Though he can speak, he rarely chooses to. His voice is a guttural, thunderous growl, the sound of roots splitting stone, of a tree cracking in winter frost.

When he answers at all, his words are brief and cryptic, heavy with meanings lost to time. More often he communicates through gestures : a clawed hand pressed into the soil, a low growl in the throat, a stare that can paralyze even the bravest hunter.

Ulmath holds a strange reverence for the forest’s cycles, death, decay, and renewal. He tends fallen trees and scarred earth with the care of a silent gardener, as if remembering a time when his claws once built instead of destroyed.

Yet his patience is not endless. To those who harm the forest or come seeking its forbidden power, he becomes the embodiment of vengeance, a shadow in the mist, a white glow between trees, the chill of breath behind the neck before the scream dies in the dark.

    Background Story

No one knows how long Ulmath has walked the Shifting Woods, nor what he was before the hunger took shape within him. Some say he was once a man, a shaman who bargained with a spirit of the earth, only to be consumed by the very forest he vowed to protect.

Others whisper he is no man at all, but a fragment of the wild given form, an ancient guardian that rose when the first tree fell to a mortal’s axe.

Deep beneath the woods lies the Hollow Grove, where a hidden spring glows with green light and whispers in forgotten tongues. It is said Ulmath guards this place, not by choice, but by curse or vow.

Some claim the spring feeds him, keeping his body alive while his soul rots into something half divine, half monstrous. Others insist he cannot leave it, bound to the grove as tightly as his tattoos cling to his skin.

Adventurers, scholars, and would-be mages have all sought the spring, lured by tales of its power, and none have returned. The forest swallows them whole, their bones sinking into the moss until only Ulmath’s glowing eyes remain, watching, patient, eternal.
